Having a straight set of teeth improves oral health and boosts self-confidence.
Teeth that are properly aligned are easier to clean and are less likely to experience premature wear and tear.
If you have children, you’re probably wondering what the ideal age is for them to start wearing braces. Let’s talk about that and more in this post.
When should children get braces?
There’s no single answer for this as it varies from one child to another. But usually, children can start seeing an orthodontist for an evaluation around age 7.
Orthodontic issues and causes vary. You may notice your child’s teeth are starting to crowd, protrude, or gape. These can be due to heredity, poor oral hygiene, or habits like prolonged thumb sucking.
If you believe your child needs orthodontic care in Kitchener, Ontario, our dental team can help. Orthodontic Smile Studio sees patients of all ages. We do our best to make sure children enjoy each of their office visits. We work closely with parents or guardians to make this possible.
When is the best time to see an orthodontist?
Each child is unique. How their teeth and jaw develop vary from other kids. You may notice potential problems over time, including:
Overbite. The upper front teeth are too far down from the bottom front teeth. In some cases, even fully covering the bottom teeth.
Underbite. An underbite is the opposite condition of overbite. The bottom front teeth are positioned way forward of the upper front teeth.
Open bite. An open bite is when the upper and front teeth aren’t meeting even when the back teeth touch each other.
Protruding teeth. Protrusion happens when the upper teeth extend too far away from the bottom teeth.
Overcrowding. It occurs when there’s insufficient space to accommodate all the teeth. It can be due to having a small jaw or teeth that are too big.
Schedule your child’s first orthodontic visit as soon as you notice any of the concerns above.
Here at Orthodontic Smile Studio in Kitchener, Ontario, we have an initial consultation to examine your child’s mouth and discuss oral habits and medical history. From there, we develop a customized treatment plan to keep issues from progressing and ensure your child enjoys a healthy and beautiful smile.
