Taking good care of your teeth is crucial when you have braces. A lot goes into keeping them clean and healthy.
Here are some tips that will help:
With braces, you need to brush your teeth and gums 5 times a day for at least 2 minutes each time. Rule of thumb, brush when you wake up in the morning, after each meal, and before bedtime.
Brush back and forth at an angle over the top of your band and bracket. Don’t forget to brush the biting surface of your teeth and the inside surfaces near your tongue.
Flossing with braces is done in the same way as normal floss, except that you have to thread it under your archwire and between each tooth with a special tool called a “floss threader” it makes this easier for people who find themselves having trouble getting to those hard-to-reach places.
Thread the floss under the archwire, remove the threader and floss each side of each tooth in the space. Pull the floss out of the space with one hand as you release the floss with your other hand.
It is important to note that certain foods are known for getting caught behind your braces and leading not only to stains, but cavities and other problems.
You should NOT eat the following to prevent trouble with your braces:
Popcorn
Peanut brittle
Taffy or caramels
Corn on the cob
Gum
How you eat certain foods is also an important factor when it comes to caring for your teeth when you have braces. When you eat a bagel you should always cut it into small pieces, same goes for carrots and hard fruits like apples and pears. If you are someone who likes to eat ice, it’s definitely a good time to stop. Even without braces, chewing or crunching on ice is never good for your teeth.
