So, what foods should you avoid with braces? While braces are a great way to achieve a straighter, healthier smile, certain foods can damage your braces, make cleaning difficult, or extend treatment time. It’s best to steer clear of popcorn, sticky candy, crunchy fruits and vegetables, corn on the cob, sugary snacks and beverages, chewy pizza crust, and nuts and seeds. These foods can lead to broken brackets, misaligned wires, or hygiene challenges, so making a few diet changes is important while wearing braces. Not sure how to adjust your eating habits? Keep reading for helpful tips and alternatives!
1. Popcorn
We all love popcorn. Unfortunately, it’s not a great choice for braces. The sharp, hard edges and small bits of kernels can get stuck between your braces or gums, dislodging brackets or wires. Plus, the pieces can push your braces out of alignment, which could lead to extra trips to the orthodontist. So, as tempting as that movie theatre treat may be, it’s better to skip it while you’re in braces.
2. Sticky Candy: Caramels, Toffees, & Others
Sticky candies like caramel and toffee are a big no-no when you have braces. These sweets can get stuck in the wires or brackets, leading to damage or even pulling parts of your braces out of place when you try to remove them. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, hold off on these until your braces are off to save yourself the headache—and potential repair costs!
3. Crunchy Fruits & Vegetables
Fruits and veggies are essential for a healthy diet, but their crunch factor can be tough on braces. Hard foods like apples and carrots can damage or loosen braces, but you can still enjoy them with a few simple changes—try slicing apples into small pieces or baking carrots until they’re soft. Bananas, berries, and grapes are great soft fruit options that are easy to eat and safer for braces. Similarly, cucumber and bell pepper slices make refreshing, braces-friendly snacks—just cut them into thin, manageable pieces.
4. Corn on the Cob
Corn on the cob is a summer favorite, but it can be a disaster for braces. Biting into a cob puts tremendous force on your braces, and leftover bits of corn can become trapped between your teeth and wires. This can lead to misalignment or damage to your braces over time. If you’re a corn enthusiast, remove the kernels and enjoy them with a fork to avoid the pressure on your braces.
5. Peanut Butter & Foods with Sticky Textures
Peanut butter has that thick, gooey texture that can quickly turn into a problem for braces. It can get stuck in all the nooks and crannies around your wires and brackets, creating an environment for bacteria to thrive. Chunky peanut butter is even riskier since the small bits of nuts could dislodge parts of your braces or create other orthodontic issues. If you can’t resist peanut butter, try switching to smooth varieties and rinsing your mouth with water or mouthwash afterward.
6. Hard Bread & Crusty Pastries
There’s nothing quite like a warm baguette, but hard, crunchy bread isn’t a good idea when you’re wearing braces. Biting into tough pastries or crusty bread puts a lot of stress on your braces, risking damage to both your teeth and the brackets. Stick to soft bread or remove the crust if you can’t resist that sandwich or toast. Tortillas can also be a great alternative to bread for wraps and sandwiches!
7. Sugary Beverages & Snacks
Sugary treats and drinks like soda, lemonade, and candy can lead to tooth decay and are harder to clean from braces. While you don’t have to give up treats entirely, limit your intake and maintain good oral hygiene. Soft cookies, ice cream, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate, and Jell-O are safer options—just be sure to rinse your teeth afterward!
8. Tough-to-Chew Meats, like Beef Jerky
Beef jerky and other chewy meat-based snacks may be a protein-packed treat, but they can wreak havoc on braces. These types of foods are tough to bite through and can put undue pressure on your braces, loosening wires or brackets. Best to find a softer, less abrasive snack to satisfy your hunger. Opt for hummus, hard boiled eggs, soft cheeses, and yogurt. These snacks are not only high in calcium and protein, but are great for your teeth and easy on your braces.
9. Chewy Pizza Crusts
Pizza is a classic favorite, but the crusts can be problematic with braces. While they’re not as damaging as harder breads, chewy or sticky pizza crusts can adhere to your brackets or wires, making it harder to clean and creating a breeding ground for bacteria. If you’re ordering pizza, try cutting the crust into smaller pieces and thoroughly brushing and rinsing afterward to prevent bacteria buildup.
10. Nuts & Seeds
Nuts and seeds may be healthy, but they’re not braces-friendly. They’re hard, crunchy, and can put pressure on your braces, loosening wires or misaligning teeth. Small pieces can also get stuck, making cleaning difficult. Choose softer, easier-to-chew snacks to keep your braces safe.
Braces-Friendly Eating Tips
Avoiding certain foods can feel restrictive, but you can still enjoy a balanced diet while taking care of your braces. Here are a few quick tips to help:
Cut foods into smaller pieces: Breaking foods into more manageable pieces makes them easier to eat and reduces stress on your braces.
Stick to softer alternatives: Choose soft options when you can—soft fruits, steamed vegetables, and tender meats are great choices.
Follow a good oral care routine: Brush and floss regularly, especially after eating, to prevent food from getting stuck and causing issues.
If you’re ever unsure about what’s safe to eat or have concerns about maintaining your diet with braces, don’t hesitate to reach out to your orthodontist for advice.
