What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that focuses on the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. An orthodontist can help to straighten teeth and correct jaw alignment using different types of braces and corrective appliances.

Orthodontic treatment can promote better oral health by helping prevent abnormal wear and fractures of teeth, difficulties chewing, and stress or decay on the jaw, teeth, or gums affected by poor alignment.

What Is Dentofacial Orthopedics?

Dentofacial orthopedics involves guiding facial growth and development, primarily during childhood. This treatment may involve appliances such as palatal expanders, which help guide the growth of the upper jaw so the child has space for their permanent teeth and their upper and lower jaws fit together well.

Dentofacial orthopedics is often used in combination with orthodontics, particularly in children who undergo two-phase treatment. In this case, the child will start dentofacial orthopedics around ages 6 to 8, when they have a mix of permanent teeth and baby teeth, and their jaw is in a rapid stage of growth and development. Later, once their permanent teeth have all grown in, they will complete orthodontic treatment to align the teeth, usually with braces or clear aligners.

Surgical Orthodontics

Orthognathic surgery, otherwise known as surgical orthodontics, helps to resolve severe dental conditions related to malocclusion (misaligned bites) and jawbone irregularities. At Orthodontic Smile Studio, we combine the knowledge of orthodontists and oral maxillofacial surgeons to provide exceptional care throughout your treatment.

Surgical orthodontics is a treatment method to correct jaw alignment in adults. It is necessary if a proper bite cannot be achieved through orthodontic means alone (such as braces). If we determine that surgery is necessary during your initial consultation, we’ll have a longer conversation about what it entails and what to expect.

If you decide to continue with surgical orthodontics, your procedure will occur within a hospital setting. We’ll guide you through what to expect during each part of the process, including how to prepare for surgery and what to expect during recovery. We recommend taking about 2 weeks off from work or school after the procedure to support rest and healing.

Once your jaw has healed, we will recommend a customized orthodontic plan to bring your teeth into their new and proper alignment. At any point during the process, whether at your first consultation or during your final stages of orthodontic treatment, we’re here to answer your questions, provide information, and support your well-being. Your comfort is our priority.

The Gift of a Lifelong Smile

Orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics, and orthognathic surgery work together towards a shared goal: to provide you with a vibrant, healthy smile. Together, these treatments can keep your teeth and jaw aligned, preventing pain, wear, or fractures in your teeth from an improper bite, and making it easier to keep your teeth and gums clean and healthy.

Whether you’re contemplating orthodontics for yourself or for your child, we’re here to help guide you through the process. Our dedicated team can help you make an informed decision about your healthcare, leading to better oral health and a straighter smile.
